CS Holdings wins bid for Cabgoc, Angola engineering

Johannesburg, 27 Mar 2002

JSE-listed IT systems integrator CS Holdings has won a bid to provide industrial IT services on Cabinda Gulf Oil Company (Cabgoc) oil rigs in the Cabinda province off the Angolan coast. The contract value is estimated at R2.5 million over two years. Cabgoc is a consortium of Angola`s national oil company Sonangol, Chevron Corporation, Elf Exploration Angola (a unit of France`s Elf Aquitaine) and Italy`s Agip, of which Sonangol is the dominant economic group.

According to Dave Vink, managing director of the Systems Integration division of CS Holdings, the contract involves the carrying out of maintenance and project management on the industrial control systems of the Cabgoc oil platforms offshore, as well as onshore at the Malonga site which houses oil purification, diesel refinery and other facilities. CS Holdings won the contract against several other companies and we are confident that it holds much potential for more business with Cabgoc in the future.

Angola is sub-Saharan Africa`s second largest oil producer behind Nigeria with the majority of its crude production located offshore Cabinda. Crude reserves are also located onshore around the city of Soyo, offshore in the Kwanza Basin north of Luanda, and offshore of the northern coast. Angola`s crude oil generally is of high quality. The crude has an API gravity ranging from 32o to 39.5o and sulfur content from 0.12% to 0.14%.

Angola`s national oil company, Sonangol, was established in 1976. A hydrocarbon law passed in 1978 made Sonangol sole concessionaire for exploration and production. Angola is attracting considerable international investment attention in the oil sector. In late 1999, Sonangol announced that more than $18 billion in foreign oil investment was being lined up over the next four years. The top foreign oil companies operating in Angola are Chevron, TotalFinaElf and Texaco.
