CSIR standardises on SAS business intelligence solution set

Johannesburg, 04 Jun 2002

With information technology making it easier to collect and store data, companies are starting to value business intelligence and the strategic advantage it brings to an organisation.

This is the view of Hans Ittmann, Programme Manager: Decision Support Services at CSIR. The respected research organisation has announced that it has standardised on a single business intelligence solution set for the first time. It has also recently been appointed a SAS Institute partner.

"CSIR has been involved in business intelligence consulting for years," says Ittmann. "Having recognised the value of the SAS product family, we have now committed ourselves to its leading solutions. Partnering with the company was a strategic move to ensure greater access to SAS' analytical tool set."

As a SAS Consulting Partner, the CSIR will be entitled to offer dedicated SAS products and solutions to its business intelligence customer base. Despite not previously standardising on a particular business intelligence product, CSIR has been using SAS technology for several years.

"SAS has an incredible array of powerful analytical tools and we were one of the earliest SAS users in the country," says Ittmann.

Founded in 1946 as an exclusive research organisation, CSIR was traditionally dependent on government grants. However, during the 1980s, the company adopted a more market-oriented approach by enlarging its service offering across industries. The organisation's current operations include research, logistics and supply chain management, criminal analysis, energy modelling, consultation as well as crime patterning - among others.

SAS partners represent the full range of business, technological, vertical industry and solution expertise. Each of these meets high standards of market knowledge, vision, integrity and customer satisfaction. Says Kerry Evans, Partner Manager of the SAS Institute: "By combining our core competencies with that of CSIR, we can provide a greater breadth of true, closed-loop solutions than neither could achieve on our own. We believe that CSIR adds particular value to our local group of SAS-focused partners."
