The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and South African universities are to host an advanced robotics and mechatronics symposium in Bloemfontein, on 10 November, to further stimulate local research and development in that field.
The symposium results from the establishment of the Advanced Robotics and Mechatronics Research Network last year, the purpose of which is to increase collaboration and enhance knowledge sharing on the subject.
The network, founded by the CSIR and the University of KwaZulu-Natal, now includes the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, Stellenbosch University, the Tshwane University of Technology and others.
The event will be followed up by a planned international conference in 2010.
Symposium themes will include:
* Computer-aided design, manufacturing, engineering, process planning and production management
* Computer-integrated manufacturing
* Design for manufacture and assembly
* Flexible manufacturing systems
* Artificial intelligence/knowledge-based systems
