Computer Society South Africa, which celebrates its golden jubilee this year, has appointed 46-year-old Anthony (Tony) Parry as its next Executive Director.
Whereas the previous incumbent was part-time, Parry will be with the CSSA full-time and will combine the roles of Executive Director and Head of Administration when he takes up his position on 1 June.
Parry has set as his goal to raise the professional status of the society, and in that way attract more members. Parry is a Professional Member of CSSA, and also a member of the Institute of People Management of South Africa.
While Parry is a programmer's programmer, having started his IT career with Cobol and currently being Chief Information Officer, Shared IT Services at Barloworld Limited, he is unusual in that his tertiary qualifications include Southern Sotho and Zulu.
Among the degrees he holds is an Honours degree in African Languages and Linguistics from the University of the Witwatersrand and an MBA from Henley Management College in the UK.
After a stint at Standard Bank, Parry joined Barloworld and made his way through the ranks in this organisation's various divisions and associated companies, including a tour of duty in Sydney, Australia.
Tony Parry is married to Moira and they have an 11-year-old son, Jason. He enjoys family life, reading, hiking and cycling.
Roger Dawes, current part-time executive director of the society, is retiring on 31 May and is moving to France, where his wife has her roots.
Moira de Roche, President CSSA, commented: "The appointment of Tony to this position marks a new era for our society, which wants to reinvent itself as a younger, and more relevant society to the ICT industry today. We are delighted that Tony shares our vision for the society, and is prepared to bring his deep experience to the organisation. We are sad to say goodbye to Roger Dawes, who has done a fine job in raising the profile of CSSA. He leaves a good foundation for Tony to build on."
