Cyber Sentry chooses Trend Micro to offer customers enhanced virus protection

Irish managed services provider to offer customers increased protection against Internet-borne malicious code with Trend Micro's InterScan VirusWall
Johannesburg, 13 Jul 2001

SecureData, an ERP.com company and the exclusive sub-Saharan distributors of Trend Micro (Nasdaq: TMIC, TSE: 4704), a global leader in network anti-virus and Internet content security solutions is pleased to announce that Trend Micro has entered into an agreement with a leading Irish managed services provider, Cyber Sentry.

Trend Micro's award-winning InterScan VirusWall, Internet gateway virus protection will now be available to Cyber Sentry's customer base in the UK and Ireland, which is made up of small to medium-sized Internet service providers and application service providers (xSPs). The agreement is the first of its kind between Trend Micro and an Irish managed service provider and is intended to protect Cyber Sentry customers from fast-spreading Internet e-mail-borne viruses and other malicious code.

Cyber Sentry offers its customers a comprehensive e-mail scanning service by installing a dedicated anti-virus server on their premises, protecting their own customers against the ever-increasing threat of Internet-borne computer viruses.

All mail is routed through Cyber Sentry's e-mail relay server containing InterScan VirusWall, and scanned for malicious code, before being allowed to continue to its ultimate destination. In this way, ASPs and ISPs will be able to protect their customers from Internet e-mail-borne viruses at the service provider's data centre before they reach the end-user's in-box, where they can be executed, resulting in further spread of malicious code and possible damage.

Cyber Sentry is delighted to be working with Trend Micro. The agreement will allow them to offer best of breed virus protection to all of their customers, no matter how big or small. Cyber Sentry said that they realised that the threat of malicious code is continually increasing, so therefore wanted to supply customers with a reliable means of protection. Given the nature of their business, protection at the Internet gateway obviously needed to be their main focus. Cyber Sentry said they knew that Trend Micro is a leading industry specialist in this area, so its technology seemed a natural choice.

Trend Micro anti-virus services now available to Cyber Sentry customers include:

  • .         Virus scanning at the Internet gateway with InterScan VirusWall to filter out e-mail-borne viruses from e-mail traffic at the service provider level, before it has a chance to reach the end-user's in-box.

  • .         HouseCall, Trend Micro's free online virus scanning service, which has recently been expanded to incorporate Trend Micro's innovative Trojan System Cleaner technology, which removes and repairs damage caused by most known Trojans in the wild.

  • .         Content filtering enabling companies to have greater control over employees' Internet e-mail usage, limiting spam, etc and avoiding network overload. Content filters also provide an extra emergency service in the case of virus outbreak as it enables administrators to easily block infected e-mail by key words, attachment names or file types to prevent them from entering the network.

  • Richard Ayres, Business Development Manager of Trend Micro UK, concludes: "Its great to be working with such a dynamic organisation as Cyber Sentry and to be doing so in both the Irish and UK marketplace. This agreement further validates Trend Micro's leadership in securing the ISP market from malicious code. It will provide more medium-sized and locally-based ISPs the opportunity to protect their customer base from nasty Internet e-mail-borne viruses by utilising Trend Micro's best-of-breed virus protection technology."

Cyber Sentry joins a host of other service providers around the world that have selected Trend Micro technology to offer their business and consumer customers virus protection as a value-added service. InterScan VirusWall

Trend Micro InterScan VirusWall provides high-performance, three-in-one real-time Internet gateway protection against viruses and malicious code. InterScan installs on the gateway server. Trend Micro's virus scanning engine incorporates both rule- and pattern-based recognition technologies that detect and clean known and unknown viruses and malicious code.

Trend Micro pioneered the concept of Internet gateway virus scanning when it introduced InterScan VirusWall in October of 1995 and has led the industry with innovative anti-virus technology solutions ever since. Today, InterScan VirusWall is one of the most stable and scalable anti-virus solutions on the market. InterScan VirusWall supports the Windows NT, Solaris, Red Hat Linux and HP-UX platforms.

House Call

Trend Micro introduced HouseCall, the Internet's first free online virus scanner, in May 1997. This was a full two years before any other vendor's online virus scanner, proving yet again Trend Micro's technology leadership in the field of malicious code protection.

HouseCall is also the only online virus scanner to have been certified by the International Computer Security Association to detect 100% of "in-the-wild viruses."

While others regularly charge for usage or only detect viruses, Trend Micro's HouseCall has always been free and continues to detect, clean and remove nasty viruses, Trojans and worms from users' systems day in and day out.

HouseCall brings the ease, accessibility and effectiveness of a server-based anti-virus application to home users over the Internet at no cost. With HouseCall, users always have access to the latest virus protection available, accessible 24 x 7, without time consuming downloads or subscriptions.

House Call is available now at www.housecall.antivirus.com. House Call works with Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME and NT Workstation users. Trend Micro also provides House Call for Exchange, which detects and deletes viruses stored in Microsoft Exchange Server mailboxes.
