Cycle Challenge gets tech savvy

Charity cyclists in this year's Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge will be fitted with units, courtesy of Altech Netstar, as part of its corporate social responsibility programme.

MapIT will be working with Altech Netstar on the live tracking initiative.

The mobile Boomerang tracking units use global positioning system () technology to track the cyclist's location. This information is transmitted, in real time, using general packet services (GPRS), enabling supporters to track their charity riders online via an interactive digital map. The digital map will have a tracking tab, which allows supporters to see the exact location of the charity cyclists they are supporting. The tab will, however, only go live on the day of the event.

There are eight charities that supporters can track in this year's event. The charities said the initiative helps them gain more exposure. There are also links on the Cycle Challenge's Web site allowing supporters to make donations to their respective charities.

“The race has become an important event on the local calendar, and we are proud to be using our expertise, in location-based services, for a good cause,” said Etienne Louw, MD of MapIT.

According to Louw, the initiative will also recognise the efforts of cyclists representing the charities.

The Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge takes place on 20 November.
