D-Link launches new Gigabit Ethernet adapter

Johannesburg, 12 Jun 2000

D-Link has announced the introduction of its high-performance, Gigabit Ethernet Adapter for providing high-bandwidth connection to the enterprise backbone.

According to Attie Pienaar, D-Link SA sales manager, the DGE-500SX is targeted at the server sector, especially in the enterprise market.

"The DGE-500SX is designed to provide a bigger bandwidth pipe between a server and the network, giving it a boost in performance and reducing bottlenecks," he says.

This adapter is designed based on a GMAC (Gigabit Medium Access Control) controller that features CLIP (Chip Level Protocol) and VLAN filtering, to reduce the utilisation of the host CPU.

"The CLIP does its own verification of errors in IP environment and its own filtering of VLAN tagged data packets, all without the need to interrupt the host CPU, thus allowing it to continue performing its server tasks," explains Pienaar.

The DGE-500SX has on-board 96KB FIFO buffers for its transmit and receive data paths to prevent overflow. Each of these paths also has independent control of selecting "Unicast", "Multicast" and "Broadcast" capabilities, allowing higher overall throughput.

The adapter is compliant with IEEE 802.3z specification for Gigabit Ethernet. It operates on SC Fibre Optical connector, allowing it to go up to 550 metres (using 50/125 micron-meter) multi-mode fibre cable.

"Introducing the DGE-500SX is only the beginning. D-Link has quite a number of Gigabit Ethernet products which are going to be launched this year. In conjunction with the launch of our stackable switch that also has Gigabit Ethernet capabilities, D-Link is now better equipped to penetrate the enterprise arena," concludes Pienaar.
