D-Link launches new high-performance stackable switches

Johannesburg, 11 May 2000

D-Link has announced the introduction of its high-performance, Gigabit capable, high port-density stackable switches to target departmental and enterprise networks. Up to 94 10/100Mbps auto-sensing ports and 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports, DES-3624 series will be able to provide the performance and management features required by large networks.

According to D-Link branch sales manager, Attie Pienaar, the DES-3624 series of stackable switches provides the scalability and flexibility to deploy cost-effective high-capacity, easily manageable networks. With the option to stack-as-you-grow, managers can easily add on extra ports to the network without extra effort because management of the stack is no different.

"DES-3624 switch is able to stack up to 4 switches per stack, providing 94-ports of 10/100Mbps auto-sensing UTP connection, and 2-ports of 1000Mbps SX Gigabit connection," explains Pienaar. "Using the Gigabit connection, network managers can connect more stacks of switches to expand the network or connect the stack to the Gigabit backbone. Both options provide high-speed inter-switch connection, thereby reducing delays in getting across the network."

D-Link`s DES-3624 switch series has features that are needed by large enterprise networks. "Provide industrial standard SNMP and RMON management support, users can make use of their existing management applications to manage the DES-3624 series," adds Pienaar.

Telnet and Web-based management facilities are also provided for simple management or configuration of the switch. With these support facilities, users do not need to install any applications to start managing the DES-3624 series.

The DES-3624 series features a 21.32Gbps back-plane bandwidth for the master hub, which ensures that the switch is able to cope with the huge amount of data flowing across the network. Other features like flow-control per port, IP Multicasting, Broadcast Storm protection, 802.1p Traffic Class Priority, etc., allows the DES-3624 series to provide more-than-adequate network solutions to large networks.

Pienaar says with the DES-3624 series, D-Link is expected to penetrate into the enterprise market segment. He elaborates that D-Link has always been very strong in the SOHO and SME segment, and with the new strategy of focusing on switches, D-Link is going after the enterprise segment as well.

DES-3624 series consists of 2 models:

  • DES-3624I which is a 22-port UTP and 2-port Modular Gigabit Fibre, Master of the entire stack.

  • DES-3624 which is a 22-port UTP and 2-port module (comes with UTP module), up to 3 in one stack and has to be stacked to a Master (DES-3624I)

Modules available includes:

  • 2-port 10/100Mbps UTP module

  • 2-port 100Mbps MT-RJ Fibre module

  • 1-port 100Mbps SC Fibre module
