D-Link today announced the availability of its Universal Serial Bus (USB) technology product range as part of its strategy to keep products simple to buy, use and manage for the SME market place. The new USB product range combines the best of SCSI architecture with advanced plug and play functionality and replaces serial and parallel ports with a single port that is extendable through hubs and devices daisy chained together. It offers significantly higher through put speeds at 12Mbps in comparison to 115Kbps.
D-Link country manager, Bertus Moller says, "In most cases a PC`s controller card is limited to using 4 or 5 extra attached peripheral devices and the number of Interrupt Request Lines (IRQ`s) are limited to 16 with most of them already utilised with other Internal PC components such as Hard disks and sound cards. In theory USB can support up to 127 different devices."
Connecting devices to a PC via a USB hub is significantly easier, but it depends on whether the user`s version of Windows supports it. USB give networking vendors seamless connectivity with a host of PC, multimedia and home devices.
