Today`s demanding applications, such as computer-aided design, electronic publishing, high-performance client/server databases, and multimedia programs cannot function in a shared-media LAN environment. At the same time, network managers must provide reliable connectivity and scalability. For many companies, chassis-based Ethernet switching solutions are the answer.
D-Link`s DES-5600 Ethernet switch is designed specifically to meet the unique needs of mid-sized networks. It offers the most advanced reliability features of any departmental switch available today, along with intelligent switch ports and modular investment protection. Targeted to high capacity Ethernet environments in corporate networking, the DES-5600 delivers maximum performance and flexibility.
According to D-Link SA sales manager, Attie Pienaar, the DES-5600 multi-tech switch is a reliable, scalable, and manageable chassis-based edge switch capable of layer 2 switching among traditional, Fast, Gigabit Ethernet segments. Port based VLAN support that is scalable to up to 64 Ethernet/Fast Ethernet or 16 Gigabit Ethernet connections, and no single point of failure makes the DES-5600 an important part of the network architecture.
"The DES-5600 implements switching intelligence in ASICs within each user module, along with system port buffering, eliminating any single point of failure and allowing a highly scalable architecture. Even if the management card should fail, the DES-5600 continues to operate, allowing administrators to hot-swap a new management card with no network downtime," says Pienaar.
Supporting advanced management features including SNMP, RMON, and Web-based management ties network management back to network managers seamless end-to-end visibility into the network. Management includes the ability to `drill down` to obtain RMON information on every port in the DES-5600. As a result, the DES-5600 is fully integrated into the backbone network.
"With its unmatched scalability, ability to support multiple Ethernet technologies simultaneously for maximum flexibility, investment protection, reliability and integration, the DES-5600 is an ideal solution for network managers who wish to protect their investment in Ethernet connectivity," adds Pienaar.
The DES-5600 features a 5-slot chassis for maximum density and flexibility in configuration.
The DES-5600 supports bridging, switching, with simultaneous support of Switched Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet. In a maximum configuration, the DES-5600 supports a total of 64 Switched 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports.
"Network managers can customise the DES-5600 configuration in several ways. Ethernet modules can be placed in flexible configurations. In addition, the DES-5600 supports network administrators` requirements to consolidate multiple decentralised hubs into a controlled switching environment," concludes Pienaar.
