Data Domain wins storage award
Data Domain, a provider of deduplication storage systems, won the SearchStorage.com and Storage Magazine 2008 Product of the Year award in the backup hardware category for its flagship DD690 enterprise storage system, reports CNNMoney.com.
The DD690 was the recipient of the publications' highly-coveted Gold Award, the top achievement in its category.
With one of the fastest user adoption rates of any newly introduced Data Domain system, the DD690 established new benchmarks across a spectrum of common data centre data protection metrics.
Quantum holographic storage surprises
Researchers at Stanford University have demonstrated quantum holographic storage, shattering long-held assumptions about the information limits of matter, according to ZDNet Asia.
Moving into the sub-atomic realm, they permanently stored 35 bits in the quantum space surrounding a single electron.
Moreover, the technique allows holograms to be 'stacked' in three dimensions. They demonstrated two 35-bit storage elements in the same space. Encoding data using mere atoms would be less than half as space efficient.
SanDisk showcases super-fast card readers
New memory card readers offering faster data transfer rates have been introduced by SanDisk, says CCL Online.
The storage card provider has developed the ImageMate USB readers to support “virtually” all standard formats currently on the market.
Senior product marketing manager, Jennifer Lee, noted that 1GB of data can be transferred in less than 35 seconds by the All-In-One and Multi-Card new editions.
They offer the ability to control the process with the press of a single button that automatically launches an application determined by the user.
