The explosion of information has resulted in huge volumes of unstructured data within organisations, which can have negative implications for governance, risk and compliance.
This is according to Grant Hodgkinson, business development director at Mimecast, who defines unstructured data as data that can't be stored in a structured model such as a database. He says this type of data is generally the result of user-based activities rather than the outputs of transactions.
Sharing information is much easier now than it was two decades ago, he says. However, this presents a greater risk of information being leaked - especially if there are malicious users within an organisation.
This is one of the governance, risk and compliance issues that organisations must address, as unstructured data can be accessed easily, Hodgkinson says. Identifying data that is deemed confidential or 'harmful', and implementing systems to control this, can address this issue.

He also believes the growth of unstructured data in organisations will not slow down, but that the methods used to share information will change.
Hodgkinson is a speaker at the ITWeb Governance, Risk and Compliance Conference, taking place at The Forum, in Bryanston, on 21 February.
At the conference, Hodgkinson will address the governance, risk and compliance issues that organisations need to address when dealing with increasing volumes of unstructured data.
