DataPro offers satellite communications

Johannesburg, 10 May 2004

Internet service provider (ISP), DataPro, has announced it has become one of the first premier ISPs to offer Internet capabilities via Telkom`s Vsat satellite solution.

Said Carine Conradie, marketing manager at DataPro: "While communicating via satellite is more expensive than ADSL or Diginet, it does benefit those customers situated in rural areas, such as mines and lodges, who need fast and reliable communication capabilities."

She said the company`s core offering costs R275 for 3GB per site. Telkom`s current core charge is R3 000 per month per site.

"We only expect a small percentage of our client base to opt for satellite communications. While this means that our satellite offering will not generate large revenues for us, we see it more as a value-added service offering for our clients."
