DataPro sets up satellite phone, Internet links for press at Cape to Rio yacht race

Johannesburg, 31 Jan 2003

Premier service provider (ISP) DataPro is sponsoring the infrastructure and Internet access at the Royal Cape Yacht Club`s media centre - as well as enabling two journalists partaking in the prestigious Cape to Rio yacht race to file stories and photographs to various newspapers and Web sites.

The network was installed at the Royal Yacht Club`s media centre last December, from where local and international journalists covering the event are now able to file their news stories.

Thanks to Internet access and Motorola satellite phones, 5FM personality Mark Gillman, and senior Cape Argus reporter, Murray Williams, are also able to file daily stories and photographs while hitching a ride on two of the competing yachts in order to get a "on the spot view" of day-to-day proceedings.

DataPro was also responsible for setting up the laptop, supplied by Spartan Computer Rentals, for Gillman on the Dalys Insurance boat and Williams, on the Love Life boat.

DataPro`s Gary Sweidan said local and international journalists are also able to plug their laptops into the network sponsored by DataPro and submit reports, including photographs, on a daily basis.
