Datatec`s Westcon secures wireless deal with Motorola

Johannesburg, 14 Apr 2004

Datatec`s Westcon Group has secured a two-year deal to globally distribute Motorola`s Canopy wireless broadband products and accessories that are making significant inroads in the business, education and government sectors. North America will be the initial focus market.

Motorola`s Canopy product line offers a secure, reliable and flexible wireless broadband solution for enterprise, public and private networks. It also has a unique and powerful modulation scheme that significantly improves the quality of data delivery and effectively mitigates interference from other systems. Canopy equipment can be integrated with voice over Internet protocol, video services and security surveillance.

"We are very excited that Motorola has turned to Westcon Group as a primary distributor of Canopy products, which are ideal `last-mile` solutions for enterprise campus environments and compliment many of our other convergence and Internet protocol (IP) offerings," says Anthony Daley, senior vice president and general manager, the Americas, Westcon Group North America, Inc. "Canopy`s portfolio is very appealing to those customers looking to replace their traditional local area network (LAN) infrastructures with a more flexible, IP capable network."

Because of Canopy`s attributes, customers have deployed this wireless broadband system in a number of unique applications, including:

* One California community is monitoring a high-traffic intersection where a high volume of car accidents occur. Cameras take real-time pictures of vehicles and drivers who violate traffic laws at the intersection and the pictures are sent via the Canopy platform to a central office where tickets are then issued to violators;

* A public utility is deploying Canopy radios and backhaul units to monitor many of its 300 reservoirs and sites. Critical data gathering information, such as water level and quality, as well as site video surveillance are monitored from a central location because of the ease of deployment of Canopy`s wireless broadband. The utility is saving thousands of dollars by eliminating many leased telephone lines and scaling back on employees who previously had to personally collect data from each site;

* Many universities have installed Canopy wireless broadband systems on their campuses so that professors, critical staff and students can access the university virtual private network from their off-campus homes; and

* A Chicago restaurateur replaced his dial-up service for credit card transactions with Motorola`s Canopy wireless broadband solution in order to reduce the time his staff took away from their customers while waiting for payment approvals. What used to take staff minutes, now can be done in mere seconds.

"Westcon Group understands wireless technology and has developed a scalable reseller base. Through our new agreement, Westcon Group will be able to offer its customer base secure, reliable Canopy wireless broadband solutions," says Kirk Byles, director of worldwide channel for Motorola`s Canopy Wireless Broadband group.
