Datatec`s US-based subsidiary, Westcon Group, has signed an agreement to carry the Nortel Networks Meridian communications portfolio throughout the US.

The deal with Nortel Networks will see Westcon, a global channel provider of and telecommunications technology products, distribute the entire Meridian product line, including telephones, integrated communications systems, messaging applications and call centre products.

Westcon says its convergence sales have nearly doubled since the first quarter of its 2003 financial year.

The Meridian Communications portfolio is Nortel Networks` flagship PBX product line for the enterprise market.

"The group made the decision to begin investing in the convergence market approximately two years ago," says Westcon president and CEO Alan Marc Smith.

"To further our strategy, we needed vendors with a significant presence in the PBX market. We felt strongly that this would be a natural starting point for the evolution of disparate legacy voice and networks into converged IP networks.

"Expanding Westcon`s portfolio to include the Nortel Networks Meridian Communications product line is another example of this continuing strategy, from which we have enjoyed great success."
