In an industry first Debswana has entrusted their IT nerve centre to specialist network integrators Blue Sky Networks (a wholly owned subsidiary of USKO).
Debswana refers to De Beers Botswana and is the administrative head office for 3 mines Orapa, Letlakane and Jwaneng.
The project valued at about R200k per annum in services alone, represents an innovative move for Debswana and a new concept in Botswana.
Blue Sky Networks is responsible for desktop support, network maintenance and datacommunications and has provided a full time on site engineer. Fanie Scheffer, MD Blue Sky Networks (Botswana) describes the arrangement as not so much an outsourcing contract, but rather a "true business partnership", with Blue Sky Networks also consulted on related business issues.
Key benefits gained by the outsource include obtaining specialist skills and resources, cost savings on all resources, support and the security of having ongoing continuity in an industry notorious for high staff turnover.
Tino Robin, Technical Projects Manager at Blue Sky Networks believes they were successful in securing the project, because of Blue Sky's long standing business relationship with Debswana and its key differentiators which include, "a unique position with local shareholders, local skills and an in-depth knowledge of the site."

Its focus has been around the value propositions of USKO, (its parent company in SA) and includes outsourcing, desktop procurement, sophisticated networks and building MS competency in the territory. " Blue Sky Networks (Botswana) has focused on bringing best industry practices to Botswana and within 3 months we hope to conclude further deals in line with this strategy" says Fanie Scheffer.
