Debtor summoned on Facebook

Metro.

The lawyer was forced to resort to the unusual method after having difficulty getting the debtor to attend court to discuss their finances.

Recalling a case in Australia where the Supreme Court gave permission for Facebook to be used to serve legal documents, Thorpe made a request at Hastings County Court in East Sussex to do the same, which was eventually granted.

According to TNW, Thorpe said: “It is great to see that the courts are willing to embrace new technology. Being able to use Facebook to do so will certainly assist in the case and allow our client creditor the possibility of obtaining further information to enforce the debt.”

Thorpe is a senior associate solicitor in Gaby Hardwicke's commercial litigation department, reveals The Telegraph.

She specialises in director's disqualifications and insolvency work. She has worked for the firm since January 2009.
