The company plans to invest $1 billion to unveil and market cloud offerings that will commence with e-mail archiving and a hosted virtual desktop offering.

Datacenter Dynamics says Dell has earmarked 12 sites for its Global Solution Centres, and says it aims to help customers carry out research and development into cloud computing solutions.

Solutions centres are planned for Brazil, Paris, Frankfurt, Singapore, Shanghai, Tokyo, Sydney, Limerick, North California, Chicago and Austin, Texas, and according to Dell, some are ready to start operating now.

Dell product marketing director for enterprise solutions and service in EMEA, Bryan Jones, says the data centre in Limerick, Ireland, has already been constructed.

According to Venture Beat, Dell hopes to transform its business from simply selling hardware to providing more value-added services that will help customers offer consumers all sorts of Web services in an era of an ever-expanding .

The move combines hardware, software and service offerings to customers that will make Dell into a more well-rounded enterprise vendor.

HP voiced a similar vision - which included running data centres for its customers - as new chief executive Leo Apotheker laid out his strategy a couple of weeks ago.

Both HP and Dell sell a lot of equipment to Web service vendors such as Amazon.com, but now they're effectively going to compete with Amazon in hosting businesses in their data centres.
