Dell South Africa, the leading server provider for small to medium-sized businesses, today announced the PowerEdge 600SC, a new small business server that offers double the performance of its predecessor, and Pentium 4 technology at a price that is thousands of rands less than major South African competitive systems.
For customers requiring more expandability and performance, Dell also introduced the PowerEdge 2600 featuring dual Intel Xeon processors running up to 2.4GHz and 6GB of double data rate (DDR) memory.
New Server and Tape Drive Provide Integrated Business Solution The PowerEdge 600SC, with fast DDR memory and integrated gigabit Ethernet (i), is designed for small to medium-sized business (SMB) customers who want to migrate from a desktop PC-based network to a true client-server architecture. It`s priced starting at R9 590 for Intel Celeron processors, and R11 990 for Pentium 4 processors.
Customers can also combine the server and PowerVault 100T-Travan40 tape drive, providing a complete data protection solution for small workgroup applications or file and print sharing. The new PowerVault 100T internal tape drive, delivers up to twice the capacity and speed of current Dell IDE tape drives and allows customers to quickly backup and recover their business-critical information.
"Businesses that still use desktop computers for file and print sharing are ideal customers for Dell`s latest server and storage offerings," said Sean Wainer, enterprise product manager for Dell South Africa. "Dell`s strategy of delivering enterprise technology at low prices removes significant barriers for small and medium-sized businesses to take advantage of server technologies, and is a major reason why Dell is the leading supplier of server hardware to SMB customers in the U.S." (ii)
Mainstream enterprise server delivers increased performance, availability
The PowerEdge 2600 brings Intel Xeon technology and high-performance Ultra320 SCSI drives to the mainstream server market with prices starting at R25 990. Designed for both SMB customers with high growth requirements as well as enterprise workgroup and departmental environments, the PowerEdge 2600 is ideal for file and print sharing and Web serving, clustered computing applications, storage area networks (SANs) and small-scale database applications.
Customers can manage the server remotely without using a PCI slot with the optional embedded remote access, a technology traditionally found in the data centre. Additional product specifications include:
* Up to eight hot-plug SCSI drives for 584GB (iii) of internal storage;
* Optional embedded RAID with 128MB of battery-backed cache;
* Six 64-bit PCI-X expansion slots;
* Hot-plug redundant power and cooling; and
* Embedded gigabit network interface card.
The new PowerEdge servers and PowerVault storage system also feature Dell`s Intelligent IT management portfolio that combines Dell OpenManage systems management software, hardware features, support services and integrated third-party management tools to help increase productivity and improve the value of IT infrastructure.
The PowerEdge 600SC and PowerEdge 2600 servers are available with factory installation of Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft 2000 Small Business Server and Red Hat Linux. The PowerEdge 2600 is also available with Windows 2000 Advanced Server and is certified and validated for Windows NT. Both servers are also certified and validated for Novell NetWare and can be purchased immediately.
