Dell releases 2.5-inch hard drive
Dell has announced its MD1120, an expansion array of hot-swap 2.5-inch SAS hard drives for use as direct-attached storage by PowerEdge servers, says Blocks and Files.
The MD1120 uses 70% less space than the same capacity using 3.5-inch drives and uses half the power.
It should also deliver more IOs per second as there are more spindles handling the data.
Storage goes green
Newer Technology has released its first sustainable storage drive, says PC Mag.
The Guardian MAXimus eMAX RAID-1 Mirror plug-and-play storage device boasts a 50% reduction in power consumption when compared to the traditionally powered 1TB drives.
Further boosting its green credentials, the company worked to ensure that the drive is RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) certified to deliver maximum data protection while offering the utmost in low noise operation.
IBM does virtualisation
As part of IBM's Project Big Green offerings, IBM announced new storage virtualisation software that helps clients more efficiently manage and consolidate volumes of business data, says SOA World.
The capabilities of the new IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) 4.3 software can help improve the flexibility and responsiveness of IT infrastructures.
Virtualisation is one of the five pillars of IBM's Project Big Green offerings, and a key component of IBM's new enterprise data centre model.
