Dell sharpens teeth for SME market

Johannesburg, 17 May 2001

Dell is targeting the SME market with its latest offer of a PowerEdge 300SC server, bundled with Microsoft`s Small Business Server.

The Small Business Server bundle comes at a price tag of R20 350, excluding VAT and freight costs, and includes a three-year onsite warranty. Dell engineers also take care of set up and installation of the software. "Customers taking advantage of this opportunity will receive free Microsoft software training as well," comments Sean Wainer, enterprise product manager at Dell SA.

According to Wainer, this is a flexible network solution designed to help small businesses with up to 50 computers. "It allows users to take advantage of the Internet, manage and grow customer relationships, as well as enhance a company`s productivity."

The standard Dell PowerEdge 300SC server includes an 850MHz Intel Pentium III processor, 256MB ECC SDRAM, 10GB EIDE hard drive, 15-inch monitor, mouse, keyboard, CD-ROM, 1.44 FD and 56K PCI internal modem.

The software package offers a multi-purpose operating system with messaging and collaboration features. It further includes shared Internet access, Web cache and a firewall. "It also offers a shared fax and modem service that allows for the creation of a Web site," says Wainer.

"The fact of the matter is that SMEs are looking for the most cost-efficient and application-rich option available. We believe the Small Business Server bundle goes a long towards achieving this," concludes Wainer.
