Dell simplifies corporate computing with new desktop

Johannesburg, 19 Jun 2001

Dell SA has announced local availability of the OptiPlex GX50, a basic desktop computer optimised for simple computing tasks in managed environments.

The OptiPlex GX50 features an Intel Celeron processor with integrated LAN, video and audio capability. It further offers simplified configuration options designed to reduce cost and complexity, without compromising flexibility, adds Leigh Hancock, product-marketing manager at Dell SA.

The product also incorporates LegacySelect 2.0, a BIOS-level interface, which allows network administrators to control the level of legacy technology their varied workgroups require. LegacySelect 2.0 supports the ability to enable or disable ports, including USB, PCI slots and disk drives.

This OptiPlex incorporates S3 "sleep state" and hibernation capabilities that allow the system to remain powered while consuming significantly less power. Its efficient Power Factor Correcting (PFC) power supply reduces the overall power demand. Hancock says both of these features combine to increase productivity through reduced system boot and login times, while encouraging increased customer awareness of power usage.

Hancock comments that Dell customers have been asking for a small, simplified system that gives administrators the highest possible levels of control. "The OptiPlex GX50 is the result of that feedback, allowing for reduced complexity and the freedom for each customer to decide which technologies they employ based on the day-to-day needs of their business."

The OptiPlex product line is supported by Dell Services, which can help lower customers` cost of computing with a full suite of services including deployment and after-sale support.

A typical OptiPlex GX50 small desktop configuration sells for R6 830, excluding VAT and delivery. It includes Intel`s 800MHz Celeron processor, 64MB SDRAM, a 10GB hard disk drive, floppy diskette drive, Microsoft Windows 98SE, three-year next-business-day onsite service, integrated 10/100 networking, video and audio capabilities, and a 15-inch monitor (13.8-inch vis.)
