Dell unveils big retention solution
The new solution combines Dell object storage with optimised RainStor database technology to provide consolidated and scalable storage for structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data.
The big data retention solution integrates with analytics platforms as a front-end big data repository for large datasets or a backend archive. It can also serve as a standalone repository or as an analytics platform with Hadoop.
Dell's solution uses commodity hardware and a flexible peer-scaling architecture with non-disruptive upgrades that allow storage to scale to billions of objects and petabytes of data without managing LUNs and RAID groups.
According to eWeek, Dell's big data retention system, aimed at enterprises that use - or are starting to use - data analytics as a business tool, follows the company's standard method of data centre operation. It integrates directly with existing analytics platforms, should a company own any.
The new hardware and software system serves as a capacious front-end repository for large data sets or an archive.
The new package can add capacity in increments of two terabytes and scale up to petabytes - and billions of objects - without the set-up and management issues and costs of traditional file and block storage, Dell Storage VP and GM, Darren Thomas, says.
Dell's big data retention solution can provide an average data compression ratio of up to 40:1, freeing up disk space approximately 97%, Enhanced Online News states.
This greatly-reduced footprint can accelerate query access for analytics. The solution leverages the capabilities of the Dell Fluid Data architecture, which enables these extreme data volumes to be efficiently accessed, moved and leveraged when and where needed.
