Deloitte names new CEO designate to take office in 2012

Johannesburg, 10 Jun 2011

Deloitte Southern Africa has announced that Lwazi Bam, a partner at the firm, is to assume the position of chief executive officer of the southern African practice when Grant Gelink, current chief executive of Deloitte, retires in 2012.

The professional services firm announced on 8 June 2011 that Bam, who has been with the firm for 17 years, would assume the position of CEO on 1 June 2012, after Gelink's retirement. Bam, who serves on Exco and occupies the positions of service line leader Corporate Finance and National Public Sector leader for southern Africa, is a previous member of the Deloitte Board and has been a member of the Deloitte Transformation Board for five years.

He is currently president of the Association for the Advancement of Black Accountants in Southern Africa (ABASA) and has served on the Securities Regulation Panel. He is also a director of the Thuthuka Education Upliftment Fund - the SAICA Public Benefit Organisation founded to assist SAICA with the transformation of the accounting profession - and the CA Empowerment Charter Council, where he represents the 'Big Four' firms.

Bam, who has been a partner at Deloitte since 2003, has gained extensive experience in the fields of acquisitions, disposals, due diligence and corporate financing, while consulting on major projects at the company. He is also a founding director of Business Beat, a Deloitte project aimed at development of the SME sector.

“We are delighted that the partners and directors have elected Lwazi Bam to the position,” said Futhi Mtoba, chairman of Deloitte Southern Africa. “He has extensive experience, and having been with Deloitte for his entire career, this appointment bears testimony to our firm's commitment to our transformation strategy, which is focused on growing our leaders from within.”

Bam will spend the next 12 months working closely with incumbent chief executive Grant Gelink as he prepares to fulfil the role of CEO.
