Demonstrated at Apple Expo Paris: Oracle`s database running on next-generation Mac platform

Oracle successfully demonstrated its Oracle9i Database Release 2 running on Mac OS X version 10.2 - Apple`s Unix-based operating system - at Apple Expo Europe held from 10 to 14 September 2002 in Paris.

Responding to customer demand and after four years of development work, Oracle9i Database on the Mac platform is available for developers to download from Oracle`s online developer community, Oracle Technology Network (OTN). The high developer demand is shown by the number of downloads - more than 3 400 copies have already been recorded to date.

The code is the product of a collaborative effort going back many years, now bearing fruit for the benefit of serious developers for the Mac platform. It will enable Apple`s customers to develop and deploy state-of-the-art database applications on their favourite platform.

According to Tim Payne, Oracle9i marketing director for EMEA, the features and functionality of Oracle9i Database Release 2 far outstrip that of any other database available for the Mac platform, and brings enterprise-ready capability in key areas such as native XML, business intelligence, high availability and reliability.

"These functions make the product a powerful player in industry segments key to Apple, such as Education, Media and Life Sciences," he says.

"Jaguar is a thoroughly modern operating system, now Unix-based but with the legendary ease-of-use that is the Mac`s hallmark. The availability of Oracle9i Database Release 2 on the Mac platform is a key development for Apple customers because it gives them the ability to use a wide range of familiar tools to deliver key business applications based on the industry`s leading database, Oracle9i Database," adds Payne.
