Recently launched DeployIT, SA`s only software deployment company, has secured a contract with Total SA that will see it repackaging and re-deploying all internal software used by the group for use by all branches in SA.
According to Jaco Venter, MD of DeployIT, the company repackaged all of Total`s internal software making use of Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) according to strict specifications laid down by Total`s international head office in Paris.
"The software was repackaged and deployed for use by all users at all branches in SA. Over 40 installations were repackaged," said Venter. "The software includes anything for small Windows applications to big client server applications."
Venter said the re-packaged software, running on the Windows 2000 operating platform, was loaded onto Total`s file server at its local head office in Rosebank, Johannesburg. "Users from around the country are now able to log into the file server and install the software remotely and use it, as needed.
"Making use of the world`s leading deployment software, InstallShield, all software configuration work was set without user interaction, such as product registration, map drivers and database connections. The whole process had to be completely transparent to the users."
Venter said a lot of companies make the mistake of trying to deploy their own software, including new and old software. This often leads to a "host of technical issues that can affect efficiencies and consume additional IT time".
"We do not only specialise in the development of installations, we also sell, support, provide tools and train in order to make the deployment of our clients` products that much easier."
