The adoption of JINI technology continues to advance rapidly and to provide dynamic service delivery from the devices to the enterprise. Over 50 000 developers have joined the global JINI technology community in the past six months with strong industry backing and a steady growth rate driving this technology forward.
The JINI community consists of manufacturers, developers, researchers and service providers. Maintaining an open market place where ideas and innovation thrive anywhere, anytime, to anyone on any device, is a strong focus of this community.
"In South Africa we have a small number of development companies that are heavily involved in JINI technology. Two of these companies are part of the JINI technology community and have been over to Annapolis in Maryland to the JINI community summit," explains Peter Castle senior systems engineer, Sun Microsystems, Middle East Africa (MEA).
"The resilient network capabilities and zero administration of the JINI technology make it ideal for a large geographic region where local skill and reliable networks are hard to come by," adds Castle.
The JINI community of developers continues to work together, collaborating on the service API's, tools and applications of JINI. More than 9 000 developers reviewed and tested the JINI 1.1 alpha release and their feedback was incorporated into the 1.1 beta edition released in May of this year. The 1.1 beta edition accelerates the development time of services and reduces a developer's learning curve.
Sun Microsystems has signed more than 20 commercial licenses over the past six months with companies deploying JINI technology. These companies, through the use of JINI technology, are developing a new breed of consumer products and services.
"JINI has broadened beyond the device space to encompass service delivery to and from the enterprise as well," says Castle.
An interesting recent application of JINI technology includes the US Department of Defense. The department is using JINI in their Tactical Operations Centres, while the US Navy is building JINI technology service components into its next generation ship computing architecture.
"JINI has made dynamic service delivery to devices and the enterprise a reality. The new service delivery offerings, in conjunction with the scalability and reliability of the JINI technology architecture, are a great step forward for Sun Microsystems and the community of developers working with JINI technology," says Castle.
Due to the high local interest in and demand for JINI by developers, Sun Microsystems SA is taking part in the ComputerWeek Developer Day on 20 October 2000.
