Dexchange announces new range of virtual interface products

Emulex`s acquisition of Giganet provides Dexchange customers with access to Virtual Interface technology
Johannesburg, 16 Mar 2001

Dexchange, local distributor for Emulex Corporation, the world`s largest independent supplier of Channel host bus adaptors (HBAs), announced today that Dexchange is now able to offer its customers Virtual Interface (VI) technology products.

Following their recent acquisition of Giganet, Emulex can now provide IP and Virtual Interface (VI) based solutions that enable high performance system and storage networks. Emulex`s IP products eliminate normal limitations by accelerating storage and database access by increasing data throughput, reducing CPU overhead and lowering latency to provide the most efficient network available for NAS and database environments.

"VI provides a direct path between a VI-enabled application and the network, bypassing compute intensive operating system and protocol processing routines," explained Mike Smith, CEO at Dexchange. "The result is maximum throughput, low latency, and reduced CPU overhead when processing application, database or file system communications."

"Storage and database solutions running over Emulex`s IP Networking products experience greater performance and scalability, delivering more data to more users, faster," said Smith.

Emulex`s VI/IP networking products incorporate both VI and IP into a single architecture. The VI/IP host bus adaptor combines the speed and efficiency of VI with the standard structure of the IP transport. Supported on existing Ethernet infrastructures, VI/IP can double storage access throughput while reducing to one fifth the computing resources needed to deliver data. VI/IP technology addresses the demands of today`s Internet applications that require sustained, high volume data movement.

Emulex cLAN networking products are the industry`s preferred solution for system area and database networks in Windows and Linux environments. The cLAN product family includes host adaptors and cluster switches that can be used to create networks ranging from two to hundreds of nodes. Leading database providers such as Oracle, Microsoft and IBM have all set new records in performance using Emulex`s cLAN VI-based networks.

The Virtual Interface (VI) Architecture specification defines an industry-standard architecture for communication within clusters of servers and workstations. These clusters enable enterprise-class performance and scalability using industry-standard servers.

VI Architecture standardises the interface for high-performance network technologies known as System Area Networks (SANs). Utilising a SAN, VI Architecture transforms a collection of independent standards-based servers into a highly scalable cluster that can meet the performance and capacity requirements of the largest and most demanding enterprise applications. VI`s fast server-to-server communications can enhance an application`s scalability and performance in a variety of ways - from allowing a single application to run efficiently across dozens of clustered nodes, to speeding up the exchange of data between distributed application modules running on different application servers.

The VI Architecture specification, is jointly promoted by Compaq, Intel, and Microsoft, and contributions from over 100 industry organizations. For more information go www.viarch.org
