Ahead of the much-awaited release of Diablo III, two freelance designers have created a Web site that provides Diablo fans with excuses for the day the game releases.
Visitors to sorryformay15.com can send e-mails to their bosses or girlfriends, excusing them from work or a date on 15 May.
By clicking 'Tell my boss' or 'Tell my girlfriend', Diablo fans can prompt the Web site to generate excuses based on the game's plot.
For example, clicking 'Tell my boss' generates excuses including: “Yo Boss. I would really like to go to work today, but I can't. No more town portal,” and “Sorry Boss, I'm really sick so I can't go to work today. But don't worry, I found a new staff for you. An elite one.”
If fans are using the site to get out of a date, excuses include: “Sorry babe, but I won't be able to bring you to restaurant tonight. I've been killed four times today. I'm out of gold,” and “Hey honey, remember the day I told you that one day I might disappear for a week or two? I finally know that day...”
Creators of the site, Simon Gu'erin, a user interface designer, and Web programmer Alexandre Barfuhok, say they have been fans of the game since its inception. They created the site to give fans something to laugh about before the game is released.
According to the creators, since the site was introduced on 16 March, it has had more than 500 000 visitors. Gu'erin says this was a surprise, adding that they did not expect to see this many visitors in such a short time period.
Blizzard Entertainment, the maker of Diablo III, did not respond to requests for comment at the time of publishing.
