Global consumer packaging group Rexam has completed the first stage of a five-year project to rationalise its regional voice and data networks into a single wide area network infrastructure.
Dimension Data has worked in partnership with Rexam to build out the new network across seven European countries including Poland, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Germany.
The fixed price project, incorporating Primer, Dimension Data`s international solution delivery framework, began in February 2001.
According to Simon Fice, Network Services Director at Rexam, the rationalised network will make it easier for the company to grow and adapt, and will create a platform for the development of new standard business applications and technologies such as voice over IP and videostreaming.
"When we started this project four years ago, we could see that as a global business we would need a highly resilient, single network that could accommodate change as we acquire new companies or divest the group of non-core businesses," says Fice. "We could also see that we could make savings by rationalising and standardising network and Internet connections."
Rexam`s WAN is built on Cisco routers and MCI WorldCom`s global network. Dimension Data managed the technical implementation of Rexam`s network service migration project and was specifically responsible for ensuring connection to local nodes. The network now supports 10 000 users across the world.
"We chose to work with Dimension Data on this project because of their extensive experience and knowledge of global networking," Fice says. "They provided the know-how to complement our own in-house network design skills, and ensure that we are able to deliver 100% integration and 100% connectivity to support our business."
Says Dawid de Villiers, Managing Director Dimension Data UK: "Rexam`s forward thinking to develop a single global network has delivered immediate communication and cost advantages across the company. We see this as a major step towards the Dimension Data goal of integrating the network infrastructure with service orientated business applications - enabling our customers to seamlessly interact with their business partners, customers and suppliers."
