DiData wins $7 million contract in Taiwan

Johannesburg, 04 May 2000

In a move which underscores its position as a leading global supplier of e-commerce infrastructure, Dimension has won contracts to build such an infrastructure for Taiwan`s state-owned telecommunications service provider, Chunghwa Telecom.

The deal - worth US$7-million - will see Dimension serve as the prime contractor in the design and implementation of an island-wide frame relay network.

In addition, Dimension will train Chunghwa Telecom engineers to ensure adequate internal support for the new network.

This brings to 46 the number of telecommunications companies (telcos) around the world - including traditional fixed line operators as well as cellular network and Internet service providers - which are Dimension Data customers.

Bruce Watson, Dimension Data`s Executive Vice President, Communications, says the network will help Chunghwa Telecom meet Taiwan`s surging demand for advanced data services.

"The onset of the Internet economy has made it imperative for telecoms to offer their customers a faster and more efficient way of exchanging information if they`re to keep pace up with changes in the digital age.

"Indeed, the contact is indicative of the upsurge in e-commerce and boom in e-business development currently taking place throughout Asia. This is underscored by Dimension Data`s recent award of a R1,7-million contract to build - and manage - the e-business network infrastructure for Korea`s largest retail group, Shinsegae," he adds.

The Chunghwa Telecom frame relay solution will provide businesses with mission-critical applications a new option of high-speed data transport without having to report to expensive leased lines.

To implement the Chunghwa frame relay network, Dimension Data is building 4 800 access ports across the island using Lucent`s next generation high capacity multiservice switching platform and Memotec`s frame relay access devices.
