First National Bank`s introduction of its DigiTag digital security solution has increased its security further and now eliminates the risk posed by security logging software, says Roland le Sueur, head of First National Bank (FNB) Internet Banking.
The small device is an optional extra for FNB and RMB Private Bank clients and generates a unique eight-digit password, which is also generated by FNB`s system, says Le Sueur. Users type a PIN into the DigiTag and the number is generated. They then type it in with their logon details.
"FNB is the first bank in SA to introduce a solution like this which truly eliminates the possibility of fraud through the recording of keystrokes.
"While FNB investigated a range of further security solutions, including biometrics and certificates, these are all PC-related. With DigiTag, each banking session requires a new code, which is generated independently of the PC," he says.
Users are now able to safely use any PC in the world for their Internet banking, irrespective of whether the PC has the latest anti-virus or anti-keylogging software installed, he adds.
The DigiTag supports the existing security measures, including the standard login procedure, the free inContact SMS or e-mail messaging service, and FNB`s online banking guarantee.
Users can have up to five DigiTags per profile, allowing multiple users to access a profile and its accounts. Le Sueur says for a promotional period, FNB is selling the DigiTag to users at R50 each. From 16 April, DigiTags will retail for the normal price of R150.
"The DigiTag has proved to be very popular. In the first two weeks, over 6 000 DigiTags have been ordered through the Web site or our call centre. It will then be delivered to the user," he says.
To order the DigiTag, FNB clients can call the Internet banking help-desk on 0860 328 257, or purchase it at http://www.ebucks.com/. RMB Private Bank clients can phone the RMB Private Bank customer service centre on 0860 67 4446, or purchase it online through www.eBucks.com or www.rmbprivatebank.com.
