Digital announces support for Oracle Data Mart Suite

Johannesburg, 16 Mar 1998

Further strengthening its portfolio of leadership data warehouse solutions, Digital Equipment Corporation has announced support for the Oracle Data Mart Suite on both Digital AlphaServer and Intel NT platforms. The solution will enable customers to deploy data marts faster and at less cost than any data mart solution on the market today. Built on the industry`s most widely used database for data warehousing, the Oracle Data Mart Suite enables companies to delve into business patterns and trends to help guide strategic and tactical decisions. "We are excited about expanding our long-standing relationship with Oracle in this rapidly growing, results-driven market," says Rob Schroenn, product marketing manager at Digital South Africa. "Digital is a leading supplier of NT-based systems. The Oracle Data Mart Suite will enable us to continue to expand that reputation by delivering unprecedented price/performance to the data mart market." A data mart is a subject-specific or application-specific line of business that contains highly focused data such as sales, marketing or financial. As organisations decentralise and, in turn, empower individual lines of business, the popularity of data marts has grown. As a result, data marts have become one of the fastest growing segments of the data warehousing industry. "The Oracle Data Mart Suite provides all the design, integration and query tools necessary for a business to implement a turn-key data mart solution on the world`s leading database - Oracle. Add to that the performance and scalability of Digital`s servers, and we truly do have a world-class combination to serve the needs of our joint customers," says Chris Bosch, product specialist, data warehousing at Oracle SA. META Group, the US-based analyst firm has estimated that the overall market for data warehousing should reach $13 billion (R60-billion) by 1998. According to a study conducted by International Data Corporation (IDC), companies in North America and Europe that have invested in decision support systems such as data marts have realised an average 401 percent return on investment over a three year period. "Digital`s worldwide services organisation was recently rated the number one systems integrator in a recent survey by ComputerWorld," notes Schroenn. "It is geared to help medium-sized companies and departments of larger corporations with their immediate data mart needs. These companies include financial institutions, manufacturers, pharmaceutical firms, telecommunications providers and health care institutions." The Oracle Data Mart Suite includes: * Oracle Data Mart Designer, a customised version of the award winning Oracle Designer/2000, reengineers the structure of source databases and provides a graphical tool to design the data mart-in a metadata repository. * Oracle Data Mart Builder, which provides a repository for storing metadata and an extraction transformation load engine that populates the data mart. * Oracle7 Enterprise Serve, which manages the data mart`s information. Oracle7`s parallel query capability optimises performance on both shared and non-shared hardware, and its bit-mapped index capability quickly processes queries across large databases. * Oracle WebServer, which provides a scaleable, secure, Web application platform that works with all popular browsers. Included is the Oracle Web Request Broker which also provides integration with web servers from Netscape and Microsoft. * Oracle Discoverer 3.0, an easy-to-use ad hoc query, reporting and analysis tool that delivers immediate access to information using a step-by-step wizard interface. * Oracle Data Mart Suite-Sales & Marketing, the first of its kind solution for data marts, provides sales and marketing departments with an integrated solution for analysing trends, marketing campaign profitability, product life cycles and promotional effectiveness.
