The Home Technology Expo at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg features a range of sound solutions for the home.
The demand for access to digital music has spurred a revolution in technology, say exhibitors. In particular, the i-deck and the Sonos are drawing crowds at the show.
The i-deck transforms an iPod into a hi-fi system, while the Sonos digital music system allows the user to control and play digital music all over a house, says Andrew Sack, head of procurement, Bsc Technologies, a distributor and exhibitor at the expo.
The i-deck, from Monitor Audio, is a console designed for an iPod, which also charges the iPod when it is docked. It has two speakers, each having separate bass and high frequency drivers. The wireless remote is effective from a distance of 10-metres, says Sack.
The i-deck accepts iPods, the iPod photo and iPod mini, and connects directly to a PC, radio or CD player, he says.
The Sonos multi-room digital music system works off a Sonos ZonePlayer, with a built-in 50-watt two-channel amplifier in each zone or room. The ZonePlayer connects to existing speaker systems then enables wireless control of the systems, according to Sacks.
Sonos extracts music from digital sources that include a PC, Mac or network-attached storage box and can be connected to existing sound technologies such as a home theatre system. Up to 32 zones may be controlled simultaneously or individually through a remote, says Sacks.
The Home Technology Expo runs until 30 October.
