Online technology store Digital Planet could set up an independent offline retail entity, if its pilot kiosks prove successful.
While most local retailers start as a physical business before going online as a clicks-and-mortar operation, Digital Planet could go the other way round, piloting three kiosks at shopping malls. The kiosks have been set up at various Look & Listen stores, and are stocked with a selection of 'physical stock`, says Digital Planet director Neil Watson.
"We look at the kiosks as another opportunity for us, rather than simply growing on from online."
The company is viewing the kiosks as a trial run, and if successful it will look into entering the retail space on a more permanent basis, says Watson. "The partnership with Look & Listen has been good for both of us. We are testing the waters here, and if it works out, we will look to set up our own stores. If not, we will stick to the online space."
However, the company says it will keep the online store separate from its retail endeavour.
"They are quite independent from one another. We have basically suggested that consumers who shop online with us continue to do so, while the kiosks are there to seek out retail consumers."
The initiative is still in its infancy and it is too early to draw any substantial conclusions, but the early feedback is promising, says Watson. "We are looking at running the kiosks for between six to 12 months, and then we will see."
If it proves successful, the company will look to set up further kiosks around the country, adds Watson.
