Digital Planet (

), positioned as SA`s virtual IT store, is stocking up on its most comprehensive range of IT products yet, as it prepares for what it believes will be its busiest festive season in four years.
Says Digital Planet Director, Neil Watson: "December 2003 is going to be our first bumper Christmas since we started in September 1999. Our sales increased by 30% in October and we expect this to continue to mid-December. We had a good Christmas last year, but this year is in a different league.
"Digital Planet provides consumers with the benefit of having direct access to the largest range of IT products available in SA, including digital cameras, DVDs, MP3 players, PCs, laptops and more. Whatever our customers don`t see on the Web site, we source for them through our call centre," he says.
"We also make online buying convenient. Our shopping basket is easy to use and our call centre is ready to answer any question a customer may have," says Watson. "Once a customer finds the product they are looking for, it takes less than five minutes to complete the transaction. We also accept all payment options."
According to Watson, Digital Planet`s products are competitively priced to ensure that customers return after they have a positive buying experience. "Price follows relationship and trust when buying online," says Watson. "Digital Planet is focused on building long-lasting customer relationships through its fulfilment expertise and customer service which is supported by a five minute e-mail response program and professional IT advice."
Watson expects online shopping to increase over 2004 and that e-commerce will become a viable sales channel as more consumers continue to buy and spend more online. "We have seen a significant increase in the average transaction value for our customers. Their attitudes towards online shopping and retailers are more positive than a year ago; our customers understand the transaction process better and are confident about paying online."
After spending two years evolving its business in order to sustain the dot-bomb challenges, Digital Planet is better positioned to play in the e-commerce market. According to Watson, the company is hiring staff, expanding its partnerships and reinvesting resources into building its community of over 20 000 people. "The dot bomb period is finished and now it`s time to get down to business, the market is ready and so are we."
Digital Planet`s evolution brings new opportunities for 2004. Says Watson: "We will be announcing a number of strategic partnerships, and will be leveraging our operations and logistics to partner with other virtual stores as their preferred e-commerce provider on the backend."
Digital Planet is firmly positioned to supply backend services including technology platforms, product management, payment processing and delivery.
