3Com Corporation has announced that it has completed implementation of a wireless network for Digiturk, one of the largest digital television broadcasters in Turkey and the first implementation of a 3Com wireless network in Turkey.
Due to cabling constraints within the building, Digiturk required a solution that enabled management executives to have access to the network in their meeting rooms, without the need for cables. With a large number of remote workers, the company also needed to establish network access on an "anytime, anywhere" basis. A wireless network was the logical solution to meet both these demands.
Waiting for the right time
"Wireless products were not readily available in the marketplace 18 months ago when we began considering wireless and those that were available were not rich enough in functionality to meet our criteria," said Digiturk`s network chief of information technologies, Mete Bayrak. "The 11Mbps technology that we use today was not widespread at that time."
3Com presented its complete family of wireless solutions to Digiturk and was selected to deploy a wireless local area network (LAN) on the meeting room floor of Digiturk`s office.
"3Com products are easy-to-use and affordable," said Bayrak. "Our main objective was to provide easy wireless access to the network for our remote workers, and we have successfully reached that goal. The products from 3Com also provided advanced high level security which was better than any of the other competing products that we tested." The wireless network, at this stage, will mostly benefit the company`s 45 notebook users.
Second phase in 2002
Digiturk meeting rooms and high-level executive floors are also now in the coverage area of the wireless network. In the second phase of the project, Digiturk is aiming to set up a wireless network across its whole building. With roaming speciality being included in this phase, mobile users will benefit from access to the network without experiencing any interruptions. This is expected to be finalised in 2002.
The Digiturk team is very satisfied with the performance of the AirConnect wireless network which provides a high level of flexibility which has directly resulted in increased business efficiency.
The wireless network established in the Digiturk offices offers expansion possibilities for the future, with new access points being set up in proportion to the number of users that require access as the company grows.
