DigiTel selects Nortel Networks to build multiservice network in greater China

Johannesburg, 23 Aug 2000

DigiTel Group Limited, a communications and solutions provider, has selected Nortel Networks to build an advanced multiservice in Greater China under an estimated US$7.5 million supply agreement.

DigiTel plans to purchase networking solutions from Nortel Networks to enhance the infrastructure of iGreatLink, DigiTel`s Application Infrastructure Provider (AIP) arm. This enhancement is expected to increase the speed of the iGreatLink core network to as much as 19.2 terabits per second.

"With Nortel Networks solutions, our new data network will support diverse traffic types with high levels of reliability, performance and scalability," said Sammy Wong, managing director, DigiTel. "It will allow us to deliver managed, end-to-end communications services to our customers. This will strengthen our position as a leading service provider in China."

"Service providers can save investment capital and operational costs by consolidating the backbones of their core networks based on IP, ATM or SONET," Wong said. "Our infrastructure integrates ATM virtual path switching and IP routing in a single platform, which enables legacy systems to migrate from ATM to IP without building a new network."

"Working with customers like DigiTel, we are delivering the new, high-performance Internet as a foundation for delivering reliable, profitable new network-based services to their customers," said Danny Ng, sales director, Internet Solutions, Nortel Networks.

The iGreatLink data network will feature end-to-end Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) Quality of Service (QoS), which can improve network efficiency through traffic engineering. MPLS also offers a mechanism for delivering Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IP VPN) solutions. MPLS-based VPN can generate new revenue opportunities and increased profitability for service providers.

Nortel Networks will also provide DigiTel with a broad spectrum of professional services, including hardware and software installation, network deployment, network surveillance and business consulting.
