In a deal valued at US$3,7-million, London-listed Dimension Data Holdings plc subsidiary Datacraft Asia, is building an advanced communications network in Indonesia to meet that country`s soaring demand for fast, cost-effective Internet services.
The contract, awarded by Singapore-listed IPCO International - soon to be renamed NueViz Limited - involves the construction of Indonesia`s first intelligent Internet Protocol (IP) network.
IPCO`s Indonesian subsidiary, PT Prestasi Cipta Pertiwi (Prestasi), recently obtained three broadband network provider licenses for Internet service provider, frame relay and wireless broadband backbone services in the Indonesian archipelago.
The new NueViz network in Indonesia, which utilises Cisco Systems` Multiprotocol Layer Switching (MPLS) technology along with the value-added services based on Dimension Data`s Global Services Operating Architecture (GSOA), will initially serve more than 50 select commercial buildings in Jakarta`s central business district.
Scheduled to go live in early 2001 and to be available in most Indonesian cities by end-2003, the NueViz-Network is the first in a series of infrastructure projects IPCO will be investing in the region.
According to Bruce Watson, chief executive, Dimension Data network services, they will also integrate Internet access, high-speed data communications, voice, video, access to applications and content-on-demand within the NueViz-Network via a single Ethernet connection.
"The new network infrastructure will provide true fixed and wireless converged services on an integrated platform, offering customers access to the latest applications in communications technology. MPLS technology, for example, is capable of prioritising and delivering mission-critical applications at guaranteed bandwidths and speeds of up to 100 times faster than conventional networks.
"This type of infrastructure is becoming increasingly popular among new telecommunications service providers around the world as it allows them to deliver high performance, carrier-class IP services including fast and cost-effective Internet applications.
"Through the NueViz-Network, companies in Indonesia will enjoy more flexibility in bandwidth usage when they expand. It also accommodates a pay-as-you-use strategy, enabling companies to invest in network infrastructure based on their current needs and to have the flexibility of adding bandwidth as and when required," Watson concludes.
