Dimension Data to build infrastructure for Telecom Namibia

Telecom Namibia invests US$17 million in upgrade
Johannesburg, 04 Dec 2006

Dimension Data, a global IT solutions and services company, today announced that it has won a US$17 million contract with Telecom Namibia to build an Internet Protocol multi-protocol label switching (IP MPLS) super core, which will accelerate Telecom Namibia's vision to be a next-generation network operator.

Dimension Data Namibia has also been contracted to provide support and maintenance services for the infrastructure.

Telcom Namibia's network modernisation programme, specifically the adoption of IP MPLS, will enable the quality of service required to support real-time voice and video as well as service level agreements that can guarantee bandwidth for Telecom's new IP product and service portfolio.

The IP MPLS super core that Dimension Data Namibia has been contracted to both build and support will, over time, become the main infrastructure backbone for Namibia, running all services, including voice.

"Telecom Namibia's existing Telecommunications Management Network (TMN) centre was built by Dimension Data and we have been providing maintenance for this centre over the past couple of years," commented James McCormack, chief operating officer, Emerging Africa and Middle East, Dimension Data.

"Part of the contract involves integrating a new operational support service system into the existing TMN centre, including a suite of products to ensure that Telecom Namibia has a 'dashboard' view of the IP super core."

In addition, Dimension Data Namibia is contracted to build the new data centres that will host the new equipment, including precision cooling and power systems and the cabling and access control to the facility.

"Dimension Data is able to provide us with all our requirements to transition Telecom Namibia to a next-generation network operator in line with our Strategic Blueprint 2010," commented Frans Ndoroma, Managing Director of Telecom Namibia.

"Having access to the extensive IP product and service portfolio of Internet solutions has been a key factor in us choosing Dimension Data as our partner."
