Dimension Data Holdings plc`s Asian subsidiary, Datacraft Asia has broken new ground with the award by PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (PT Telkom) of a US$6 million voice-over-IP (VoIP) network contract to a consortium of Datacraft Indonesia, NEC Nusantara Communications and Stimec Alita Nasio.
The first phase of a five-year plan by Indonesia`s leading telecommunications provider to become a major regional infocom company, the contract will link 19 cities across the archipelago. The new network will enable PT Telkom to introduce a host of VoIP applications including domestic and international pre-paid/post-paid calling, wholesale, voice VPN, PC-to-phone and unified messaging.
"IP-based voice networks are fast becoming accepted as the standard platform for 21st Century telecom service providers," said Handy Wirawan, Director of Datacraft Indonesia. "By incorporating state-of-the-art VoIP technology into its new network development, PT Telkom is building the platform to become a full provider of infocom services.
"This is Datacraft`s first major voice service contract in Indonesia and gives us a firm foothold in the fast-developing VoIP area. It also provides an opportunity for us to penetrate other areas of PT Telkom`s business, such as ISP services, mobile telephony, operational support systems and the construction of Indonesia`s high-speed nationwide IP backbone."
Datacraft Indonesia`s successful implementation of a pilot VoIP network in one of PT Telkom`s regions played a critical role in the award of the national contract.
The new VoIP network is based on equipment from Cisco Systems and will be integrated with a state-of-the-art IP billing and customer care system using Portal Software`s Infranet products. With these components in place, PT Telkom will be able to retain market share and increase revenues by introducing a range of sophisticated new services.
The current phase of PT Telkom`s five-year network development programme is due to be completed by 2004. Handy says he is confident that Datacraft together with the consortium will go on to win subsequent phases based on its expertise in IP network technology, strong local and global support capabilities and range of professional services.
