DLK`s GIS team helps Oostenberg get info online

Johannesburg, 26 May 2003

DLK Consulting has been engaged in a project to capture civil services into Oostenberg region`s Intranet Mapping Service`s GIS (Geographic Information System). It is one of the six regions within the City of Cape Town.

This, the latest in a three-year R300 000 GIS data capture project, will transfer eight filing-cabinets of paper-based technical specifications of the region`s stormwater, sewage and water service infrastructure into the GIS system from where it can be more easily accessed by officials.

Johan Snyman, Interim District Co-ordinator TRS, says DLK has been entrusted with this exacting and time-consuming tasks because the proven experience of its GIS team.

"We`ve worked with the team for sometime and have found their professionalism and dependability exceptional."

DLK GIS consultant Sue Binedell says this phase of the project will be completed by the end of July. The 240km2 region includes the areas of Kuilsrivier, Brackenfell, Kraaifontein and Blue Downs.

"The data capture for areas within the Oostenberg region`s GIS system is happening incrementally in accordance with budgetary requirements. As more and more information comes online, the easier it is for officials to answer queries from property owners and developers.

"Having accurate information at their desktops also helps management better plan their budgets and manage their costs. Having easier access to information also helps staff answer public queries more efficiently."

DLK`s GIS team has previously implemented a pilot project of Oostenberg`s solid waste system when the region switched from black-bag garbage removal to bins. It was also instrumental in the initial establishment of the Zoning Department`s GIS.

The team has also worked on GIS data capture projects at Blaauwberg region, and Swartland, Drakenstein and Eden District municipalities. They have provided spatially-based maps of invasive alien vegetation for the Western Cape`s department of Water Affairs and Forestry, as well as capturing 1:10000 map series contours for the Department of Survey and Land Information.
