Two of South Africa`s computer networking companies - both members of the DNS Group - have partnered to address government information technology (IT) needs in the KwaZulu-Natal province. DNS Networking (KwaZulu-Natal) and Choice Technologies, a black empowerment enterprise, have agreed to pool resources and skills to address Government IT business. According to DNS Networking (KZN) MD, Gavin Labuschagne, the process of delivering information through the corridors of power in KwaZulu-Natal has to start with training and technology skills transfer, with technology tools such as the Internet paving the way to the global information society. "Creating the environment for creative learning and teaching, or stimulating innovation in business can all be made possible with a well co-ordinated strategy of technology delivery," said Labuschagne. "For example, Internet access, computer-based learning and management information systems may be used for effective teaching, as well as management tools for performance monitoring and quality enhancement within Government departments. "The effects of IT used in this manner could have spin-off benefits in other developmental sectors such as health and tele-medicine, agriculture, housing, the environment and employment generation - all of which are keys to South Africa`s entry into the global economy." Semela Tseka, MD of Choice Technologies, said that the concept of globalisation, as applied to South African business endeavours, has to involve all levels of society - including the education departments and government, working in partnership with the information, communications and technology sectors. "The establishment by the Government of the Universal Service Agency and its National Computer Foundation is a significant step forward towards this goal," he said. "An investment in technology and communication infrastructures in the Government sectors will play an important role in ultimately increasing the productivity of labour and business. "There are many opportunities for key players to assist in moving the country from high levels of illiteracy to computer literacy - thereby enabling our society to meet the objectives of a strengthened economy," he said. Tseka added that using an information infrastructure to empower people and promote economic development is a key role for Government. "At Choice Technologies it is our aim to actively participate in the development of a nation-wide information society and assist all South Africans to gain access to information."
