In a move to update and modernise its existing Token Ring/IBM network architecture, Fedsure, one of South Africa`s largest financial services companies, has installed a new campus network at its head office in Johannesburg.
Designed by DNS Networking, in association with 3Com, the 1000 workstation network is based on a central fibre optic backbone architecture featuring 3Com switching/hub technology.
According to DNS marketing director Keith Boyd, DNS is the only 3Com Advanced Systems Partner in South Africa and therefore has the resources and skills necessary to integrate the range of 3Com products within modern high speed networking infrastructures.
DNS has the highest level of 3Com technology in the country - reflected by its position as the only 3Com NSI in South Africa.
"This, together with its commitment to 24-hour backup and technical support, well positions the company to meet the challenges presented by our organisation," said Fedsure network manager, Mark Gordon.
Gordon says the decision to upgrade the Fedsure network was made because of the need to implement management on the network and to facilitate the later deployment of a flexible virtual LAN infrastructure to streamline operator movements and the creation of workgroups.
"Currently the network is using a Token Ring topology, but the design will allow us to upgrade to higher speed technologies - ATM or Fast Ethernet - to meet future demand."
"The major benefits of the new network include faster and easier access to information, a much higher reliability rate and flexible paths for future growth," added Gordon.
"In addition, there is provision for high speed, high throughput options to cater for future bandwidth intensive, multimedia as well as video and voice applications."
Software applications include finance, human resources and in-house developed business, insurance and investment systems.
