DNS networks MOZAL

Johannesburg, 05 Jan 1999

DNS Networking, the Dimension Data Group subsidiary, has been awarded the contract for the networking of the construction office computer network at the MOZAL plant in Mozambique.

DNS Networking is a member of the DNS Group, one of South Africa`s fastest growing IT companies. Through DNS Group companies and partners, DNS Networking offers a portfolio of products and consulting services which cover the spectrum of design, planning, implementation and management of sophisticated multi-services networks.

The temporary construction office complex will have a projected lifespan of two years. It will house 150 people, ranging for administrative staff to specialist engineers.

In addition to linking users at the construction site, the network will allow access MOZAL`s computer system at its head quarters in Johannesburg, as well as an office situated in the harbour at Maputo.

Features of the network - which makes use of Bay networking equipment and Motorola wide are networking communications products - include full internet access, e-mail facilities and data/voice communications between the harbour office, construction site and headquarters.

Significantly, radio links are to be used on the site-to-harbour segment.

In addition to the network infrastructure, DNS Networking has also been awarded the contract for the supply of Compaq network servers and all data and power cabling.

DNS will also be responsible for the maintenance and support of the network, in partnership with the DiData Africa organisation in Mozambique.

The network installation was expected to be completed by mid December 1998.

The key challenge facing DNS was that of logistics, reveals DNS project leader Rob van Deventer. He says that the co-ordination of the supply of equipment to the remote site proved difficult - intensified by language difficulties.
