Pretoria-based Diamond Network Technologies (DNT) has introduced the new version of PictureTaker, a software delivery tool that will self-install any type of software via any delivery mechanism, be it e-mail, over the LAN or online.
"PictureTaker Enterprise Edition from LANovation provides companies and individuals with the ability to install any applications - from the simplest programs to Windows NT service packs - via various mediums like e-mail, Web or via the network, in a few minutes," says Rhys Taylor, sales and marketing director of DNT. "It reduces the time normally associated with installing software by copying file 'pictures` onto the client workstation while the user works.
PictureTaker adds full support for Windows 2000, unattended and after-hours installations, and the ability to create self-installing files. It also includes an "Expert" that lets administrators build Web pages for software distribution, built-in file and registry conflict checking, and an optional status bar display for target PC users.
By using the two-step, graphical "Expert", administrators are able to capture software installations and updates in a single-file format called a Package. PictureTaker`s single-file design allows network administrators to create just one Package for each distribution task (eg a software rollout), rather than creating several files to accomplish a single installation. Further, the application`s smart variables ensure the Package will correctly install itself on each target PC, regardless of the PC`s configuration or previous installations.
When remote PCs need updates, an administrator can quickly convert the Package to a self-installing file, or to a Windows Installer file. "A package is distributed to target desktops through a corporation`s existing infrastructure via the Web, e-mail, network log-in scripts, CD-ROM or any of the network management suites, such as SMS, ZENworks, or Tivoli," explains Taylor.
