Communications minister Siphiwe Nyanda has appointed Mamodupi Mohlala as his new director-general at the Department of Communications (DOC).

Mohlala, who is currently the Pension Fund adjudicator, is expected to take up her new appointment at the beginning of next month. She was present today in Parliament for the communications committee interviews of eight candidates for the vacant ICASA councillor position.

Enquiries by ITWeb with people close to the DOC confirmed Mohlala has been appointed as the senior public servant in the department. It is unknown when an official announcement on this will be made.

Gerda Grabe has been acting as director-general since the previous incumbent, Lyndall Shope-Mafole, resigned in January in order to enter party politics. Shope-Mafole is currently the Congress of the People party member in the Gauteng legislature.

Mohlala served as an Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA) councillor until June 2007, before moving to become the Pension Fund adjudicator. She caused some controversy just before leaving ICASA when it was found she was “moonlighting” by doing private work for her own firm.
