Documentum, Sun alliance certifies Documentum 5 products on Sun Java System

Johannesburg, 17 Oct 2003

Documentum, the enterprise content management (ECM) provider, and Sun Microsystems have increased the level of commitment in their respective alliance programmes.

Key products of the Documentum 5 ECM platform have been certified to the Sun Java System (Formerly Sun ONE) Application Server, and the companies have agreed to extend availability of Documentum Portlets for the Sun Java System (formerly Sun ONE) Portal Server. The portlets provide easy-to-use access to content services provided by the Documentum ECM platform.

The announcement underscores the customer benefits of a long-standing relationship between Documentum and Sun, by providing tighter integration and best-in-class solutions that help reduce customers' risk, complexity and time to market.

"The Sun Java System Application Server 7 provides a J2EE compatible platform for deploying enterprise applications and Web services. With more companies realising the financial benefits of an open, standards-based infrastructure, Sun and Documentum are helping accelerate time to implementation and ROI," says Jan Dry, solutions and technology manager at Sun Microsystems for the sub-Saharan Africa region.

"This is complemented by the peace-of-mind of the J2EE standards-based seal-of-approval through the Sun Java System app server certification," he adds.

By leveraging the benefits of the Sun Java System Application Server for users, Documentum extends its range of supported Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) technology-based application servers, to offer freedom of choice in the deployment of content applications based on the Documentum ECM platform.

The enhanced strategic relationship with Sun reinforces the companies' shared vision of providing standards-based, enterprise-class platforms for demanding mission-critical applications.

"The Sun Java System-certified products of the Documentum 5 ECM platform include Webtop and the components provided by the Documentum Web Development Kit (WDK). Webtop is an easy-to-use interface that allows users to access the Documentum repository and content management services from a standard browser," Dry says.

The WDK is a powerful framework for rapid development of content-rich Web applications that leverage the proven strength and reliability of Documentum. WDK is a developer's toolkit that contains a library of more than 170 reusable, pre-built components and controls that perform common Documentum content management functions. Documentum has certified all these components and controls for the Sun ONE Application Server. It also has a certification schedule for other Documentum products, including Documentum Administrator, Web Publisher and Digital Asset Manager forthcoming.

"The combination of the Documentum ECM platform and Sun Java System platform continues to be widely accepted by global enterprises looking to reap the many benefits of Java scalability and extensibility provided by J2EE. This will allow us to maximise return on investment for our customers," Dry concludes.
