Don`t buy tickets from online scalpers, says CWC

Cricket World Cup (CWC) has warned fans that any tickets they buy through unauthorised channels could be cancelled out of CWC computer systems before the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003.

The lawyer acting for CWC, Clifford Green of Edward Nathan and Friedland, says on the official Cricket World Cup Web site that he has identified various pirate organisations "on-selling" tickets at inflated prices.

Tickets are being offered for sale through newspapers and online auction sites for up to 10 times their original value. This morning, www.ebay.com had at least 13 sellers offering tickets for sale at reserve prices ranging from $9.99 to $1 000 for a five-match Wanderers package for two, including the final match.

On www.bidorbuy.co.za, about 40 sellers were offering tickets to World Cup matches this week. While many of the auctions had low reserve prices, frenzied bidding is driving ticket prices well above the original recommended prices.

One auction for two tickets for the final match started with a reserve price of R1. By this morning, the leading bid stood at R2 100 each.

CWC points out that the conditions for sale of tickets clearly states that the bearer shall not sell, donate or transfer a ticket for commercial gain. It says tickets may be purchased only through the official selling channels at the grounds, through the Web site www.cricketworldcup.com, or via the call centre on 083 123 2003.
